So i’m leaving for Las Vegas on Monday, from Minneapolis. I can’t decide if I want to do the Denver - Salt Lake City - Las Vegas, skip Salt Lake altogether, or do the Rapid City - Salt Lake City - Las Vegas route.

Suggestions?

Pic unrelated.

I might be a little biased, but Colorado is way more rad than South Dakota.

Disclosure: I have not been to South Dakota.

Being from South Dakota I’m a little biased, and as much as I love the Black Hills (headed there tomorrow!), there’s a whole lotta nothin between the Cities and Rapid. Granted there’s a whole lotta nothing between the Cities and Denver as well (done that drive a few times), but once you get to Denver it should be much nicer for longer.

South Dakota has quite a few little pockets of awesomeness, and the rest of the state has it’s own kind of beauty, but it’s not really the kind of beauty that lasts. It quickly goes from, wow this is pretty cool, to Ok I’m ready for something different, to when will it end, to this is my life now, then just as you start approaching the put me out of my misery stage the landscape changes and you either start all over, or wind up in one of the pockets of awesomeness.

I’ve done both routes in the past. I just can’t decide for this one.

Denver to SLC is beautiful, I’ve driven that a few times. But umm, SLC is not on the way to Vegas from Denver? Unless you just want to make the detour.

Why not take 90W, Black Hills, Yellowstone, to Jackson then south to Salt Lake, then Vegas?

I’ve spent time in and driven through both. Both states kinda suck until you hit actual terrain. For SD that’s the badlands, for Denver it’s the home range.

my opinion is to skip over denver. I am not expert on the city but when I was there, i didn’t find much to write home about.

Salt Lake city was by far my favorite. Namely because few miles out is salt flats. Even if you don’t drive on it to save your car, worth seeing it

If it helps your decision, i f you go the Rapid City route I’ll let you buy me a beer, or several.

I’m on a timeline. I’m leaving Monday and need to be in Las Vegas by Wednesday night for Supras in Vegas. I agree that Denver to SLC is beautiful, it’s one of my favorite day drives in the country. SLC is one of my favorite cities and I have friends there, so I usually make it a point to stop on my way out west. It’s not that far out of the way, and it breaks the Denver to Vegas drive up in to an easy 8 hour day then a 5 hour day. I’ve never done Yellowstone. I may think about that.

Denver is just a logical stop on the way. I’d only be spending a night there, then getting back on the road. I have spent a fair amount of time in Utah, agree that SLC is a great city.

Our MPLS network has two main routes, one via Seattle and LA, but the primary route goes through Denver.

If you do Colorado, go through Golden and Clear Creek Canyon. Colorado National Monument is right off 70, too.

If you do South Dakota, don’t miss Devil’s Tower, and going through Yellowstone only adds less than 200 miles...

I say Denver, a much more interesting trip

I see, that all makes sense. I don’t think you can fit Yellowstone into that timeline, unfortunately. It doesn’t look that big when you’re planning a trip like you are, but you don’t want to (and can’t) drive through at 70.

Once I was into Utah I used to like to take 191 / 6 instead of staying on 70 but I don’t know if it’s faster, just... not interstate.

Have fun, be safe, all that.

I’ve done that drive as well as hopping north at Rifle Colorado and then jogging west on a few different US Routes. Been through Dinosaur a few times lol.

Really there are a lot of good options, I just don’t know which one I want to commit to yet. In all reality I probably won’t make the decision until I hit Interstate 90 heading south from Minneapolis.

Yeah, east Colorado is definitely just west Kansas. Coming in to Denver on I-70 from Kansas is extremely boring.

If you’re on a timeline, don’t go to Yellowstone. You can easily spend a full two days in Yellowstone, and it’s a slow go up to the park and back .

Two days is tight to do that drive in general. I’d take 90 through SD, then cut down to 80 in Wyoming, through SLC and then take 15 the rest of the way.

Computer networking joke. MPLS. Fiber routes. Internet.

Sorry.

I’ll think about Devil’s Tower, but Yellowstone is probably out of the cards this time. If I was leaving Saturday or Sunday I’d think about it but I have plans all weekend.

I technically have 3, I don’t need to be in town in Vegas till Wednesday evening, hence thinking SLC is a good waypoint since it’s 5 hrs and change to Vegas from there.

Yep agreed. SLC is a good stop point and we have also stopped a few times in Buffalo, WY, which is kind of a cool little town - parts of the TV show Longmire are set there. Probably about 11hrs from Minneapolis. 7.5 to Salt Lake from Buffalo by interstate.

If you were crazed to do the dime store tour of Yellowstone, you can leave Buffalo and cross on the Bighorn Scenic Byway (awesome and 65MPH limit) over to the eastern entrance of the park, skirt the lake and exit south to Salt Lake via Jackson, WY and Grand Tetons National Park. That would be about 12 hrs, if everything goes right.  Weather can be a factor anytime of year, but it wouldn’t be unheard of for things to be closed/snowy by now, so make sure to check and see how the roads are before you try to make that happen.

The earth returned a 10mm socket to me a couple of weeks ago. A nice deep snap on socket was just gleaming up by the curb while walking my dog. It certainly makes up for at least 2-3 of the Craftsman or Husky ones I’ve put out into the ether .

Yeah, weather is a concern this late in the year, and I’ll be driving the Supra. It’s on good all season tires (pilot sport a/s 3+) but not an ideal car for a snowstorm.

I would absolutely love to do Yellowstone, but I think that might be a trip I’d rather do with the family and as a specific destination rather than a side trip from the main event.

If it was just on the way I’d drive through, but it’s far enough out of the way that it’s not practical.

I appreciate your suggestion
